10 TIPS TO WRITE A BESTSELLING STORY

A good story is what would put you in the limelight, but writing one is not easy, and even harder when you try to write a bestseller.

In this post, I present 10 tips or secrets to writing a bestseller. These tips are a summary of my personal experiences and the researches I have made in 10 years as a writer and seller.

1.       Once you have a story to write, try as as much as possible to write in one sitting if the story is short or in one season (3 months), if the story is long. Don't worry about the plot, you can edit that later. The first draft is usually the discovery process. Just keep writing.

2.       Your protagonist is what develops a bestselling story. Make sure you develop your protagonist to make decisions that would make him fall deeper into whatever trouble your story gets him into and must come to a point where he makes the decision to get out. Use other characters, like a villain or a fool that reveals the protagonist's softer side. This is one way you can further development the protagonist.

3.       A best-selling story must be suspenseful and full of drama. Without these two, you can never have a great story. To create a suspense, use a dramatic question like "is she going to make it?" This is how you put your protagonist's fate in doubt while arousing your reader's mind to know what happens next.

4.       Paint a beautiful picture that your reader's can see right in front of their eyes. Your story should play like a movie in their minds. The rule here is to show the story to unveil in your reader's mind.

5.       A best-selling story should come with a good dialogue. Therefore, you must have an intimate knowledge of your characters to create a beautiful dialogue. Use less of "he said," "he exclaimed," "she announced," etc.

6.       Every best-selling story involves the death of a loved character. They may wake up later in the story but this is necessary to elucidate pity on the side of your readers. Tap into the power of death in your story telling.

7.       Edit your work. Polish your work in 3 drafts.

8.       Share your work and never allow criticisms to deter you from succeeding. Pick yourself up and make it happen.

9.       Promote your work. Don't leave your books at the shelves. Learn to pull web traffic to your bookstore page.

10.   Learn to give your characters certain flaws that your reader's can relate with because perfect people simply do not exist.
